Arikamedu Archaeological Site – A Glimpse into Ancient Roman Trade in Pondicherry

Located just 7 km from the heart of Pondicherry, the Arikamedu Archaeological Site is a hidden gem for history lovers and curious travelers. Known as a once-thriving Indo-Roman trading center, Arikamedu holds the remains of ancient civilizations that date back over 2,000 years.

Historical Significance of Arikamedu

Arikamedu was an important port city between 2nd century BCE to 8th century CE. Archaeological excavations revealed that this coastal settlement had extensive trade relations with the Roman Empire, Mediterranean merchants, and South Indian kingdoms. Roman amphorae, Arretine ware, beads, and semi-precious stones discovered at the site prove that Arikamedu was one of the earliest international trading hubs in India.

The name Arikamedu is derived from the Tamil words “Arikan-medu,” meaning “mound of Arikan” – referring to the high mound where ruins were found. French archaeologist Jouveau-Dubreuil and later British archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler conducted key excavations here in the 1940s, bringing global attention to the site.
