Sacred Heart Basilica

The Sacred Heart Basilica Pondicherry, also known as the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is a historic Roman Catholic church located near the Puducherry Railway Station. Known for its impressive Neo-Gothic architecture, the basilica is an important religious landmark and pilgrimage site in Pondicherry.

The Sacred Heart Basilica history dates back to 1895, when the project was initiated by Archbishop Mgr. Gandy. Construction began in 1902, and the church was consecrated on December 17, 1907. In June 2011, it was officially elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica.

The church features a Latin cross design, twin spires, rose windows, high vaulted ceilings, and detailed architectural elements. Its interior is particularly known for colourful stained-glass panels depicting Catholic saints and events from the life of Christ, making it a notable example of Gothic architecture in Pondicherry.
