Sacred Heart Basilica

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus also known simply as Sacred Heart Basilica is a majestic Neo-Gothic church built by French missionaries between 1902 and 1907, consecrated on 17 December 1907.

Located on South Boulevard near the railway station, this basilica is the only one in Pondicherry and the sixth in Tamil Nadu

The church spans approximately 50 m by 48 m, rising to 18 m in height. Its Latin-cross layout, twin-towered façade with striking red-and-white brickwork, and 24 granite columns supporting the structure make for an impressive visual spectacle

Inside, visitors will find 28 stained glass panels depicting scenes from Christ’s life and saints, an ornate high altar, a statue of Madonna, a grotto for Our Lady of Lourdes, and an adoration chapel. Elaborate chandeliers and Latin-rite design enhance the spiritual and architectural grandeur.

Raised to minor basilica status in September 2011, the church is an active religious site and pilgrimage destination. With a seating capacity of about 2,000, it hosts daily Masses and special services during Christmas, Easter, and its annual feast around mid‑June
