Marquis Dupleix Statue
The Dupleix Statue Pondicherry, also known as the Marquis Dupleix Statue, is a historic bronze monument located at the southern end of Goubert Avenue on Promenade Beach. The statue commemorates Joseph François Dupleix, the former French Governor-General of French India, and is an important landmark reflecting Pondicherry’s French colonial heritage.
The Dupleix Statue history dates back to 1870, when it was commissioned by the French government and sculpted by French artist Théodore Gruyère. Unveiled on July 16, 1870, the statue was later moved to different locations before being relocated to its present seaside setting in 1979.
The Marquis Dupleix Statue Pondicherry depicts Dupleix wearing formal 18th-century attire, with a sword and a map of Puducherry in his hand. The bronze figure stands on a carved granite column overlooking a landscaped park and the Bay of Bengal, offering visitors a scenic combination of history and coastal views.
For visitors exploring Pondicherry tourist attractions, the Dupleix Statue location at the southern end of Goubert Avenue makes it an easy stop along the Promenade Beach route.
