Immaculate Church
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral, also known as Samba Kovil, is one of the oldest churches in Pondicherry, originally built in 1692 by French Jesuit missionaries. Reconstructed multiple times, the present structure from 1791 stands as a symbol of Pondicherry’s rich colonial history and spiritual roots.
This elegant white-and-yellow church features classic Baroque-style architecture, with arched ceilings, stained glass windows, and a peaceful courtyard. Its serene ambiance and European charm make it a favorite for tourists and photographers visiting White Town.
The church is still an active place of worship, conducting daily mass in Tamil and English. Major events like Christmas, Easter, and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (on December 8th) are celebrated with great devotion and community participation.
